A cassette is usually fitted at high level within a ceiling, often with only the fascia element visible giving a clean look with an excellent distribution of cool and warm air. A cassette can be fitted with optional extras like presence & floor detectors to further improve energy efficiency and occupier comfort, UV streamers or Plasma Air Bi-Polar Ionisation Systems to deeply sanitise and purify the air of viruses, bacteria, fine dust and allergens, they look great too with aesthetic features such as designer fascias where style and functionality are key.

Condenser’s or outdoor units as they are sometimes referred to are fitted externally and are connected to the indoor air conditioning unit with pipes and power cables. Depending whether the system is demanding heating or cooling, the condenser will absorb or reject heat from / to the outdoor air. Their location is critical to the efficiency of the system as a whole. A mechanical compressor inside the condenser unit forces the refrigerant gas around the system to deliver heat or cooling as required. Condensers vary in shape and sizes but if how it looks is important; then they can be painted, wrapped or disguised with enclosures to blend into the surroundings.

Condensers are required for every installation and can be connected to multiple indoor units and types.

All air conditioning systems need a controller of some sort. Whether hard wired and fixed to a wall, hand held so you can point it at the AC unit or even WiFi controlled using your smartphone 100’s of miles away the user controller can switch the air conditioning on or off, adjust the temperature set point and vary the speed and direction of the air blowing out of the unit. What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is an extremely versatile device that takes heat energy from a relatively low temperature source and forces that heat to a higher temperature making it more useful. There are different types of heat pump, we specialise in air to air heat pumps, commonly known as air conditioning units.

What are the different types of heat pumps?

The most common type of heat pump is an air to air heat pump, these are commonly found in homes and offices and are used for both cooling and heating the air in a room. Among the other types are ground source heat pumps and air to water heat pumps. This technology is commonly used to heat water used in hot water and heating systems; heat pumps like these are widely used in sustainable building projects.

Are air conditioning heat pumps easy to install?

Heat pumps must be installed by a qualified F gas engineer and generally speaking we can find the right solution for any application.

Why do I need to service my air conditioning unit?

Put simply, a clean AC unit will run more efficiently, use less energy and improved your indoor air quality (IAQ). We use environmentally safer biodegradable disinfectants which are effective in killing MRSA, Legionella and many other germs which can exist inside your AC unit and when left unattended can cause smells and block condensate drains. Commercially in some cases, servicing your air conditioning will be essential requirement to comply with the F gas regulations.

Will servicing my air conditioning unit really save me money?

Your air conditioning unit uses electrical energy to power a mechanical compressor moving refrigerant within a closed system and a fan which moves air through filters and across heat exchanger coils. Unmaintained, over time dust and dirt will clog up the air filters, heat exchanger coils and fan blades reducing the effectiveness of the heat exchange process and dramatically reducing the efficiency of the mechanical compressor resulting in higher running costs.

Do I need planning permission to install an air conditioning unit?

Air to air heat pumps are sustainable sources of heat energy and are widely regarded as an improvement to a building. Domestically a heat pump installation is likely to be acceptable under “permitted development rights” however in commercial premises, we recommend that you have the permission from your landlord or building owner before proceeding.

What are F gases and what are the regulations?

F gases are a family of manufactured gases used in a range of industrial, commercial and domestic applications. F gases were often introduced as replacement for ozone depleting substances and while F gases are not ozone depleting, they are powerful greenhouse gases with a global warming potential that can be many thousand times higher than CO2. Heat pumps contain F gases in a hermetically sealed system.

Introduced in 2006 as a European Union Regulation, The F Gas regulations as they are commonly known have been amended several times and aim to protect the environment by restricting F Gas emissions.

The F gas regulations apply to all commercial enterprises who operate appliances that contain F gases and also any person or business that wishes to manufacture, supply, install, repair or handle F gases or the appliances that contain them.

What is a TM44 Inspection of air conditioning systems?

A TM44 is the guidance method for carrying out an energy assessment of air conditioning units in commercial premises, they are a legal requirement under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. In some commercial premises there is a requirement to have certain air conditioning system inspected every five years by an energy assessor, a breach of these regulations carries a fine.
